Buddha names an “awakened one” free from samsara, the cycle of rebirth and suffering in which are trapped the non-awakened beings. This cycle finishes for each being as soon as he reaches nirvana. Buddhism is based on the Siddhartha Gautama’s teachings who lived in India in the 6th century BC.
